Vince
SY Vince Lombardi 2017 Stallion out of appendix mare Johann and by SY Chilo. This colt was born on Superbowl Sunday, he came out on day one wanting to conquer the world. One of the strongest foals we have ever seen. He came out alert, with good straight legs and a short back. From day one this colt has caught our eye and he has earned the spot of being a San Ysidro Polo breeding stallion not only for his looks but his fantastic brain. He has been super smart and willing throughout his training this far. He started playing polo Fall of his 3yo year and took to it seamlessly.
He is easy and trustworthy to ride on the ranch, open gates off of, swing a rope off of, and extremely eager to pen the cattle up. He has a lot of cow in him, which transfers very easily to the polo field. He seems to pick up on the natural flow of the game and want to “cow” the ball, and always is wanting to win the ride off. We couldn’t be more pleased with this offspring from Chilo and Johann.
Chilo
Chilo, San Ysidro 1998-2020 homebred (Sombra x Aggies Southpaw) has been San Ysidro Polo’s sire.
Sombra was a 1982 SY homebred mare (Zelda x Debtors Haven). Debtor’s Haven was a 1973 Chestnut colt by Tom Rolfe (1962) out of Due Dilly (1969). Tom Rolfe was the leading colt of his generation in the US. In 1965, he won the Preakness Stakes and was voted the American Champion Three Year Old Male Horse. A compact, 15.2 hand stallion, he won 16 of his 31 starts as a three year old, with $671,297 in career winnings. He continued racing as a four year old, winning the Aqueduct Handicap in 1966. Debtor’s Haven, his colt, won $144,090 in career earnings from 11 wins, 12 seconds, and 10 thirds. He started 72 times, ably demonstrating the Tom Rolfe line’s superior soundness, grit, and tenacity. These traits continue today in the San Ysidro homebred polo ponies bloodline.
Aggie Southpaw’s breeding is Forty Niner (Mr. Prospector) on the top and a Tom Rolfe mare on the bottom. Mr. Prospector’s racing career (14 starts: 7-4-2) was cut short due to a broken sesamoid bone, but as a sire he went on to lead the North American general sire list in both 1978 and 1979. He sired 182 stakes winners (15.1% of named foals). His influence continues today, as all the horses running in the 2018 Kentucky Derby were of Mr. Prospector’s lineage.
Chilo’s short-back and compact Thoroughbred frame at 15.2 hands comes directly from his sire and grand-sire. On top of his good polo conformation, he is kind and gentle with an intelligent mind. Chilo is a pleasure to be around and shares that golden quality with his progeny. Alston Beinhorn bred Chilo and his dam, Sombra at the San Ysidro Ranch in south Texas in the early 1980’s. Sombra’s dam Zelda was purchased and played by Beinhorn from Ray Harrington around 1980. Zelda was one of Bob Tate’s original Thoroughbred band from Army remounts in Sheridan, WY. Many notable polo ponies were bred by Bob Tate in his day.
